- Salutation: To the Honorable the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for Washington County. Sitting in Chancery
Abstract
Winny Cryer asserts that she and her child, Turner, have been living in Washington as free people for more than twelve years. Elizabeth Cocke has now claimed Cryer and her child as slaves. Cryer believes that Cocke, or her agent, Peter E. Hoffman, is planning to sell them out of the county of Washington. She states that she has filed a petition for her freedom and that of her child and seeks an injunction to prevent Cocke from selling them beyond the jurisdiction of the court.
