Margaret Garner asks for a divorce with alimony from her husband, Thomas Garner. The petitioner states that she and her husband moved to Pensacola from Mobile, Alabama, in 1836. She further states that her husband began abusing her not long after their marriage, "all which she has endeavoured to bear hoping that he would amend and that she might continue to perform towards him the duties of a wife." Garner confides, however, that the situation has worsened and out of concern for herself and others she "fled from his house and took refuge in the house of her brother where she remains without adequate means of support." The petitioner seeks support from her husband, noting that he owns real property in Alabama and Florida, as well as eleven slaves.
