The plaintiff avers that she became the owner of an estate, including slaves and land with an estimated worth of $20,000 - $30,000, at the death of her first husband, Mathew Turner. The plaintiff then married Dr. Christopher B. Strong whom she characterizes as motivated "by the sole desire of obtaining the possession and control of her property." She describes him as "habitually intemperate," with a "violent and ungovernable temper." She notes that on one occasion he "seized her by the throat and choked her" and that he was often guilty of "cussing and abusing her in most shameful manner" before his departure from the state.
