Petition #20586307

Abstract

Johanna H. Burgheim asks the court to give her clear title to the slave John, and an injunction preventing Abraham and C. Frances Fredenburg, or their creditors, from claiming him. She states that the Fredenburgs executed a promissory note to Edward E. Adamson "for the purchase of a negro boy named John," with the understanding that John would revert to Adamson if the note was not paid within the time stipulated. The Fredenburgs then left the state of Florida, leaving John and other property, in the care of John H. Burgheim. Burgheim's wife, Johanna Burgheim, paid the note when the Fredenburgs failed to return, and she now seeks title.
