Abstract
In 1784, John Carroway Smith borrowed a sum of money from Henry Coape. To secure this loan, he mortgaged nine slaves, "with the issue of the females." Coape, who has not yet received his money, asks that Smith be forced to settle his debt, or that he be allowed to foreclose on the mortgage.
