Petition #20680602

Abstract

Mary Jackson, the wife of Joseph Jackson, asks by her next friend Samuel Beckum [Buckan] that her husband be required to appear and show cause, if any, why her plea for a divorce should not be granted. Mary states that she has been an obedient wife but that Joseph has "lived in the habitual indulgance of carnal commerce" and the "daily commision of Addultery" with a "negro woman" whom he owns. He has "countenanced & permited" the slave to beat and whip his wife. He has been adulterous with other women as well, both black and white. Moreover, Joseph has treated Mary in a cruel manner and has banished her from his home.
