John Humphries writes on behalf of "certain Free persons of color by the names of Jane, James, Rose, Pleasant, Bob, Solomon, & Tilda." Humphries claims that, although Jane and her four children, as well as Solomon and Tilda, are free people of color and thus entitled to all the privileges of free people of color, they are currently held in slavery by John McKenzie. He asks the court to appoint him as their guardian "for the purpose of enabling him to bring a suit to emancipate said persons."
