Mary Phelps Ellis, Nathan Ellis, and Robert Haynes are the administrators of Overton Phelps's estate. In this capacity, they were in possession of a female slave named Barbary, whom they estimated to be worth $1,000. They claims that they "casually lost" the slave, and the latter came into the possession of one Robert Gresham. The petitioners allege that Gresham knew that the slave was their property, but he "converted the said negroe woman slave to his own use." The petitioners sue for $2,000 in damages.
