William G. W. Lane, a minor, sues by his guardian, James Torrance. Lane is the owner of a slave named Sharlow, valued at $700. He informs the court that he "casually lost" the slave, who came into the possession of Insel Spence. Lane alleges that Spence knew that the slave belonged to him, but, with intent to defraud, Spence "converted and disposed of the said male negro slave to his own use." Lane claims damages of $1,000 and asks that Spence appear at the next Superior Court session "to answer your petitioner in an action of Trover."
