James Jones paid $600 to Lewis Wood for a twenty-five-year-old slave named Jake. Wood guaranteed that the slave was "sound -- both in Boddy and mind." Jones contends, however, that Jake "labored under a constitutional disease which is commonly called Asthma ... which periodically wholly incapacitated him from labor whereby the said negro Jake became and was of no use or value." Moreover, Jones charges that he has incurred medical expenses. Alleging that Wood defrauded him, Jones claims $1,000 in damages.
