Darling Jones is the guardian of Andrew D. Beatty and Thomas Jefferson Beatty, the orphans of Thomas Beatty, deceased. In this capacity he possessed two slaves, Dill and her child, valued at $1,000. Jones states that he "casually lost" the slaves, who came into the possession of Thomas McGriff. The petitioner further charges that McGriff knew that the slaves belonged to the minors but, with intent to deceive, "converted and disposed of the said last mentioned negro slaves to his own use." Jones claims damages of $1,000 and asks that McGriff answer his "action of Trover & Conversion."
