Abstract

Ann Palmer, acting on behalf of her ward, Asbury Palmer, sues Jesse Williams and others for $800 in damages arising from the maltreatment of a slave, Jim, hired out to Matthew Gaston for the year 1834. Asbury avers that during that year, Jesse Williams, John Peck, Christopher Brooks, William Burgess and James Murray "Wickedly and unjustly intending to injure your petitioner ... whilst said negro was in the possession of the said Matthew Gaston as aforesaid with sticks Cowskins & platted whips did beat whip bruise wound and ill treat said negro in a most cruel & unmerciful manner and in Consequence of said whipping bruising wounding and ill treatment the said negro man Jim was greatly injured and was sick sore lame & disordered for a long space of time." The petitioner expended large sums of money in an effort to cure the slave and seeks compensation on this account.
