Thomas Brewer states that Lorenzo Furgurson, Matthew Hale and Josiah Jordan owe him $170, plus interest, "for the hire of Negro man Nat." Jordan secured the promissory note in which the defendants pledged to repay the debt and return the slave within one year. In addition, the defendants promised to provide Nat with "one winter suit of Clothing, two Summer Suits of Clothing, One pair wool socks, one wool Hat, two pair course shoes, one nine quarter Blanket and his taxes to be paid all clothing to be of what is called good negro clothing." Brewer avers that the defendants refuse to pay the debt and he seeks $250 in damages.
