Abstract

Mary Davis states that since her marriage to William Davis in 1825, her husband has treated her most cruelly, beating her with his "hands feet rods and waggon whips" and threatening to take her life. Mary was finally ousted her "from his bed & house to seek shelter for herself & children with her neighbors or in his barns and negro kitchens." She charges that he is prone to "incessant intoxication & uninterrupted & repeated adulterous intercourse with other women married & Single, bond & free." Davis avers that her husband has had "Carnal Knowledge of & intercourse with a negro woman slave," and also with Polly Leach and various unknown women. She seeks a divorce from William Davis.
