Abstract
In 1839, James Rowe purchased a slave, Hannah, for $885 from Thomas Staples who was acting as an agent for Ezekiel Brown. Despite assurances from Staples that the title to the slave was clear, Hannah was later levied by the Clarke County Superior Court to pay off Brown's debts. Rowe seeks to collect $977.50 damages from Staples for misrepresenting Brown's solvency.
Result: Dismissed.
