The petitioner, Erasmus Dozier, is suing The Iron Steamboat Company for $2,000. Dozier hired out a slave named Howard, who the company placed on the steamboat "Randolph." Dozier claims Howard was subject to "Whipping beating wounding maiming and ill treating as to cause and occasion him to fall from the said Steamer ... and there drowned." Dozier asks that the company appear in court to answer his claims.
