Petition #20686602

Abstract

When William D'Antignac died in 1861, his widow, Mary Ann C. D'Antignac, her son, Harris H. D'Antignac, and her son-in-law, John W. Walker, were made administrators of his estate. D'Antignac's will stipulated that "My plantation negroes, horses, cattle and every thing connected with my plantation I leave to my wife ... to be worked and managed to the best possible advantage under her exclusive direction." He directed that profits were to be used first to pay off a mortgage on the plantation to Louis Dugas, then reinvested in "negroes to be worked on and used for the benefit of said plantation." Mary Ann C. D'Antignac states that as a "result of the recent war, the emancipation of slaves in our state and the incidents thereof" it is now impossible to make money on the plantation to pay off the mortgage. Therefore, she seeks the court's permission to sell property belonging to the estate and to rent out the plantation in order to raise money to pay Dugas.
