Petition #20779901

Abstract

Margaret Banta, widow of Abraham Banta, claims to be "entitled to her Dower & one third of the personal estate" of her late husband. She charges that her son, Henry, under the pretense of signing an agreement to work the plantation, fraudulently conveyed her interest in the estate to him. In addition, Banta states that learning "from a report which prevailed that the negroes left by her Decd. husband would be set free She was alarmed & mentioned it to her son." Henry Banta then convinced Margaret to sign another paper, claiming that it would prevent the slaves from being set free. In reality, it was a bill of sale conveying six slaves to Henry. She asks the court to decree the bill of sale and agreements null and void.
