Petition #20780601

Abstract

Thomas Hall asks for a new trial and that a subpoena and an injunction be issued to Forbus Devers. Hall became involved in a dispute between Devers and a neighbor, Joseph Brandon, concerning horses used as partial payment for a slave. Brandon purchased the slave, Stephon, for thirty pounds and two horses. He discovered the slave was an "idiot," and when one of the horses returned to him, he decided to keep it. When Devers came to the Brandon residence to retrieve the horse, Hall, the petitioner, delivered the message to him "that he should not have the horse." Devers then filed suit against Hall. Hall, "young and inexperienced as he was," did not take the suit seriously, and a judgment was rendered against him. He asks for a new trial "to show the fraud imposition and injustice of the said Deft. Devers."
