Petition #20780702

Abstract

Ralph, "an old man of color," and his wife and daughter, both named Jenny, have petitioned to establish their right to freedom. They allege that their former owner, Thomas Hogan, "did freely and voluntarily" manumit them, after they "had served him faithfully for many years and borne with humble submission the galling yoke of Slavery." But, after Hogan's death, they were seized by Thomas Jones, administrator of Hogan's estate. Jones, "not having the fear of God before his eyes, but moved and seduced by the mammon of avarice and unrighteousness," sold them to Richard Phillips. They now ask that Phillips be prevented from removing them outside the jurisdiction of the court, and that they be permitted to attend when the court hears the suit they have filed to establish their freedom.
