Petition #20780803

Abstract

Benjamin Grimes seeks settlement of a dispute concerning the purchase of a slave named Robert. Grimes claims that he purchased Robert from the defendants, John and Stephen Boyle, "owing to the repeated assurances of said Defts that said slave was of a fair character, honest and valuable--and that their title to him was indisputable." After the purchase, Grimes was informed that the defendants' claims were fraudulent, and he asked them to cancel the contract and obligation, which they refused to do. He also discovered that Robert was "of the most wicked depraved & abandoned character and has in fact been almost entirely worthless." John Boyle has instituted a suit against Grimes for payment for the slave. Grimes asks that the Boyles answer his allegations in detail and that John Boyle be prevented from pursuing the suit.
