Petition #20781107

Abstract

James Ferguson states that William Vernought is indebted to him for "eighty-five Dollars as Fees for professional Services rendered." Even though Vernought has left the state, it is believed that he is legally "entitled to one-third Part of the Negroe Slaves" that his deceased wife Nancy inherited from her first husband, Asahel Linn. Ferguson says that another suit has been instituted by Linn's heirs, who are in collusion to divide the slaves among themselves to the injury of Vernought's creditors. Ferguson asks that the defendants answer the charge against them, that the court prevent sale of the slaves, and that the slaves be subject to collection for recovery of the debt.
