Petition #20781312

Abstract

Alcey Hiat petitions to settle a dispute regarding the will of her late husband, Lewis Hiat. In his will, dated 21 November 1812, Lewis bequeathed four slaves to his widow and five slaves to his son Allen. Alcey Hiat claims that her husband placed the will in the possession of P. W. Brown for safekeeping and that after Hiat's death, his son, Allen Hiat "applied to the said P W. Brown for the will under the false pretext" and then expedited the will to probate. The petitioner charges that Allen Hiat, in confederation with Samuel and Susannah Berry, attempted to suppress the will and "deprive your Oratrix of her said legacy." She asks that the defendants answer her allegations in detail and that they be "enjoined from ever molesting or hindering your oratrix in the enjoyment & possession of the legacy so devised."
