Benjamin Bruce asks the court to restrain any proceedings against him for the payment of a note made by him to Joshua Bowdrey for the payment of a female slave. Bruce contends that Bowdrey "well knew said negro woman to be at the time of the sale to be incurably deficient in both her arms & one of her feet from broken bones ... and she is besides more than half an Idiot." Her condition, therefore, was not sound as warranted by Bowdrey and this should have voided the contract. However, Bowdrey assigned the note to others who have filed suit against him for payment.
