Petition #20781706

Abstract

Francis Coleman died the "owner of two thirds of two certain slaves named Tom and Peter." John Hutchinson owned the other one-third interest. Hutchison sold his interest in said slaves to Covington Coleman for $310 in 1814. In a previous action, the Harrison Circuit Court decreed that possession of the slaves be divided between Francis's heirs and Hutchinson: the heirs keep the slaves for two years and Hutchinson [now Covington Coleman] keep the slaves for one year, in "that way divide the profits of said negroes." Noting that this arrangement has become inconvenient, the petitioners ask that the slaves be sold and a proper division of the proceeds be made to the interested parties.
