In 1818, Deputy Sheriff Paschal Craddock offered at auction a slave named Jane, whom William Wilkinson purchased. Wilkinson asserts that Craddock and the crier assured him that the slave was healthy and thirty-five years old. However, after the purchase the petitioner found Jane to be "about fifty years old, and so afflicted and disordered that she is of no value." Craddock has refused to rescind their contract, and Wilkinson asks that Craddock be "compelled to deliver up your Orator his note & take back sd negro."
