Petition #20782003

Abstract

Basil Israel petitions for the return of a slave named Beck and her increase, who he claims in right of his wife, Elinor Mansell Israel. Elinor's father, Samuel Mansell, bequeathed Beck to Elinor in 1779. She and her husband, living in Maryland, possessed the slave "for the period of thirteen years, without any claim or interruption" from the executors of Mansell's will. Subsequently, Mansell's son and executor, George Mansell, took possession of Beck and her six children to satisfy a claim against the estate and moved the slaves to Kentucky, where he then lived with his family. Israel charged that Mansell's actions were fraudulent and that the claims against the estate were covered by the statute of limitations. He instituted suits in Kentucky to recover the slaves, but for various reasons, they were unsuccessful. George Mansell has now died, and the extended slave family, numbering sixteen, has been dispersed throughout his own family or sold for the benefit of his estate. Israel petitions for their return.
