Petition #20782208

Abstract

Sally claims that "upwards of 20 years ago" she was brought by William Wells to the Michigan Territory, where slavery was expressly prohibited. After remaining there for some years, Sally "was free by the operation of said laws." She then entered into an indenture, but the time of that indenture has expired. Sally has a child, Armistead, born after she was free and likewise considered free. She claims that a certain Robert Turner "has within a few months past carried off her husband & five of her children who were entitled to their Freedom and threatens to do the like with her & her child." She asks the court for an injunction, restraining Turner and all others from carrying them away and for restoration of their freedom.

Result: Granted; appealed; appeal dismissed.
