The petitioners, heirs of Abraham Field, claim that he "died possessed of large amount of personal estate & negroe slaves which immediately at his death came to the possession of the said William Lewis who shortly after ... qualified as his administrator." Lewis has had use of the slaves ever since; he has also sold the rest of the personal estate and has taken the money which was part of the estate. The complainants ask that Elizabeth Field, Abraham's widow, be assigned her dower in the slaves and a distributive share of the property; that the remaining slaves be sold to allow an equitable distribution among the heirs; that Lewis be compelled to make an accounting for all the personal property, including the use and hire of the slaves since Abraham's death; and that he be required to pay for their hire.
