Petition #20782706

Abstract

Sarah Ender claims that she is a free woman of color "illegally detained in slavery by one Henry Dougherty who is about to remove her forcibly to parts out of the jurisdiction of the Courts of this Commonwealth." While Ender claims that she gained her freedom by a deed of manumission from William Dougherty, Henry Dougherty claims he purchased her from John Dougherty. She states that she has instituted an action on the law side of the court to try her right to freedom, and she asks the court to restrain Henry Dougherty from removing her out of the state and to have the sheriff take her into possession unless Dougherty posts bond.

Result: Dismissed.
