On 25 July 1827, Nathan Haden sold Samuel Hopkins five slaves -- a woman named Betsy and four children -- for which Hopkins executed his note for $850. Since the purchase, Anthony Haden, father of Nathan Haden, has instituted an action of detinue for the slaves "claiming them as his own." Hopkins believes they do belong to Anthony, and he asks the court to set aside the contract between himself and Nathan and to compel Nathan to return his note and to be "enjoined from assigning & transfering said Obligation to all and every persons Whatever."
