Petition #20783202

Abstract

Charlotte claims that she was born in Pennsylvania in 1787, "of parents then slaves." She further states that by an act of 1780 "for the gradual abolition of slavery," however, she was born free, as was her daughter, Emily. She has instituted a suit to establish her freedom, but fears she and Emily are about to be "forcibly removed from this Comth & sold in slavery" by the defendants. She asks that the defendants be restrained from removing her and Emily. She also requests that the sheriff be directed to take her and Emily into custody until her suit for freedom is decided, unless the defendants post bond sufficient to ensure they will not remove the petitioners from the jurisdiction of the court.

Result: Dismissed.
