Abstract

Bailey Riley claims that John James, owner and commandant of the steamboat Splendid, took his slave Bailey, "Sometimes called Weller," aboard his boat and out of the state, and now Riley "has wholly lost sd. Negro." James left Bailey in Cincinnati and has not tried to recapture or return him. Riley says that Bailey was worth $700 and that "he was a young man of good health & of good constitution-Stout and active." Riley asks for "a decree equal to the Damages Sustained by reason of the premises and that Said Boat be subjected to the payment thereof."

Result: Granted.
