Petition #20783715

Abstract

In his will, the late William White "emancipated and liberated certain of his slaves, some to be free at his death others to be free at definite periods of time thereafter." Charles, one of White's slaves, charges that the heirs destroyed the will when they became acquainted with its provision for emancipating the slaves, and that he has been hired out for the last four years although he should have been freed. He asks the court to summon the defendants and determine what they know of the will, to restrain them from interfering with him, and finally to decree him his freedom plus compensation for his hire. [The answer of Robert G. Vance, attached to PAR #20783714, contains details about the hiring value of Charles and his sale from Lawrence Young to Vance and Elisha Athy.]
