Petition #20783809

Abstract

When Elizabeth Moore died in 1825, her will ordered the emancipation of all of the slaves contained in a trust created before she married. She directed her trustees to emancipate one slave named Absolem "at the age of twenty five years he being first bound to learn some good trade." Absolem charges that he was not taught a trade and has not been manumitted, although he turned 25 in June 1837. He asks that he be compensated for having not been taught a trade, that his freedom be decreed, and that the defendant be compelled to pay him for labor done since he became twenty-five years old.
