Petition #20783818

Abstract

On 1 April 1837, Pierson M. Bryan wrote a promissory note for $2147.78 to Halloway Ashbridge and Company. On 9 July 1838, the company transferred the note to Reuben L. Coleman. Coleman says that Bryan never paid any amount on the note to either the company or himself. Bryan has left the commonwealth, but "a certain Edward Coleman who resides in Harrison County" holds a slave family that belongs to Bryan. Reuben Coleman asks the court to decree that part or all of the slaves be sold to pay the debt.
