- Court: Chancery
- Salutation: To the Hon. George M. Bibb, Chancellor of the Louisville Chancery Court
Abstract
Minerva, a woman of color, testifies that her master William White stipulated in his will that she would be free when she reached twenty-four years of age. She is now thirty-three and she charges that the White heirs have "suppressed and destroyed said writing" with the intention of keeping Minerva and others in slavery. The petitioner asks the court to recognize her right to freedom and also to award her back pay for the nine years she was unjustly enslaved.
Result: Denied; appealed; reversed.
