Samuel Poindexter hired his slave George to Stephen Lucas and Edward Black for the year 1850 at the rate of $90. The contract stipulated that Lucas and Black were to "give Said George Good Summer Clothing & a Good Jeans coat & under Jacket & two pair of Good Jeans Pantaloons for winter & a Good Pair of shoes & socks & pay his tax." They also promised they would "not drive him in weather that would Render him unhealthy & regard his health as [their] own property." Poindexter petitions for payment of George's hire and his taxes. He also notes that defendants "failed to give said boy a hat, which plaintiff states is worth 75 cts."
