In 1851, John P. Wilson married Francis A. Thomas, daughter of the late David Thomas. Wilson notes that his father-in-law "devised to his daughter Francis A. ... a tract of Land lying in Bourbon County containing Two Hundred & four & 1/4 acres. Also Three negroes named George Ann, Louisa, & John." Wilson informs the court that "the woman George Ann has a child about 2 years old named Topsy. There is also a negro man named Dudley ... part of sd decedents estate not specifically devised near forty years of age." He further explains that a codicil to the original will stipulated that the property left to Francis was to be held and owned by her for "her separate and exclusive support" and after her death it would descend "to the children of her body." Explaining that the property is inconvenient to manage and would be difficult to improve, Wilson wishes to sell the land and slaves and reinvest the proceeds from the sale. He asks that commissioners be appointed to report on the value and profits of the estate and for proper relief.
