Petition #20785823

Abstract

Archibald Edger states that he purchased a 17-year-old female slave named Letty for $830 on 25 October 1856 for "a foreign market." Letty was sold by Ferdinand Peck, acting as trustee for Catharine E. Porter. Edger reports that Porter instituted a suit against him that claimed Peck had no authority to sell Letty to him. Noting that a judgment for $1080 was rendered against him, the petitioner seeks a judgment against Peck for damages sustained by the breach of covenant.

Result: Transferred to equity.
