James Dromgoole, a resident of the Mississippi Territory, represents “that some evil disposed person persuaded” his slave named Jane to run away from him “and to transport herself to the County of Pointe Coupee within the Territory of Orleans.” Dromgoole found Jane in the possession of William Willburn, who has “harboured and protected the sd Slave and has refused to deliver up the sd Slave to your petitioner.” Dromgoole prays that Willburn be ordered to return Jane and to pay $1,000 in damages.
