Petition #20881201

Abstract

Thomas Stokdell presents to the court that, in September 1811, he sold an unnamed male slave for $500 to Alexis Porche. He claims that, "relying on the word" of Alexis Porche, the sale was sealed on a verbal agreement. Three months later, however, Porche returned the slave without "alleging" any of the reasons which could authorize him to do so. The slave was then sent back to Porche for whom he has been working ever since. Meanwhile Porche has refused to pay Stokdell the agreed upon price. Since Porche refuses to accept the slave as his property, Stokdell wants to collect $300, plus interest, for "rent" and compensation for the "discredit" brought upon his slave by Porche's action. The "discredit," he adds, is particularly injurious in light of the current difficulty of selling slaves caused by the low price of cotton.

Result: Partially granted.
