Petition #20881202

Abstract

Patrick McDermott seeks to collect a debt from Alexander Porter, who “resides permanently without the limits” of the Territory of Orleans. Although the petition does not mention the origin of the debt, related documents reveal that McDermott purchased a female slave named Ami from Porter in 1809 for the sum of $450. Although Porter warranted Ami to be sound, McDermott alleged that she was in fact afflicted with the disease of “falling sickness.” That very same year, McDermott filed and won a suit against Porter for the authorization to return the slave to Porter and to get his money back. He now asks the court to enforce the judgment by attaching Porter’s property in the Territory.
