Petition #20881301

Abstract

James Robinson seeks to annul the sale of a slave. Robinson writes that he purchased a slave named Ester and her child from Mauresel White for six hundred and fifty dollars. White warranted Ester to be "sound and healthy ... Altho at that time and for a long time previous thereto the said Slave was afflicted with a complaint called the King's Evil," also known as scrofula, "which in its nature is incurable and renders the said Slave absolutely unfit" for labor. Upon discovering Ester was thus afflicted, Robinson applied to White "in a friendly manner to take back the said slave" but White declined. Therefore, Robinson prays that the sale be canceled and that White be ordered to pay $700 in damages.
