"The petition of Harvey Norton of the City of New Orleans respectfully shews that James Curran also of said City, illegally and unjustly detains from your petitioner a negro man named John aged twenty seven years, which said negro man is the slave and lawful property of your petitioner-- to the damage of your petitioner one thousand Dollars-- Wherefore he prays that the said James Curran may be cited to appear before this Court and be there adjudged to pay your petitioner the aforesaid damages and to deliver up the said negro Slave, and pay the costs of this suit."
