Dr. Vincent Joseph Boniface Trabue seeks to identify the owner of a slave whom he claims stole his property. Trabue states that a slave named Louis, who is "now confined in the Gaol of this city; did Steal from the plaintiff on the 22 of December last year a Small box containing various precious objects to the value of two thousand dollars and upwards." Trabue has not been able to identify Louis's owner and fears that the person "does not reside in this State." Therefore, the doctor prays that the court "direct the Sheriff to cause public advertisement to be inserted in the public news papers to the effect of Summoning any person or person who may have or pretend to have any interest, rights or claims against the said negro." If such person is found, Trabue prays that they defend the slave's actions; if no person is found, or the slave is not defended, Trabue prays that Louis be sold "or delivered to him."
