C. R. Caune claims that Charles Dupard, a free man of color, owes him $823, in connection with the purchase of a slave. In 1808, Dupard purchased a slave named Goumer, a cartwright, from the community estate of the late Marie Jones, wife of Bernard Marigny. The conditions of sale required that Dupard mortgaged his land to secure the debt. Upon completion of the sale, the debt was transferred for collection to C. R. Caune. Caune seeks the court’s assistance in collecting the debt from Dupard who has so far refused to pay.
