Petition #20881408

Abstract

Louise, Louis, Popotte, and Birotte Borêche, heirs of the late Genevieve Sire, petition for the return of the mulatto slave named Marie Claire and her two children. The petitioners claim that their grandmother, Genevieve Sire, a resident of the island of Saint Domingue, gave Marie Claire to their aunt, Marie Claire Armet, for “safekeeping" during the troubles which prevailed in said Island." Armet brought the slave to New Orleans, where Armet eventually died. Marie Claire is now, with her two children, in the possession of Popotte Fleury who refuses to relinquish them. The Borêches ask the court to compel Fleury to "deliver up the said slaves together with a reasonable compensation for their services." It is possible that, as many of those who left St. Domingue for Cuba and later Louisiana in the early part of the 19th century, the Borêche and Armet families were free people of color and slave owners; this fact however cannot be unequivocally confirmed.
