Jeremiah Spiller petitions to recover his brother's runaway slave. According to Jeremiah, he was entrusted with the care of the "negro man slave named Ned" while his brother, George Spiller, was serving time in the United States militia. Jeremiah claims that Ned ran away from him about two weeks ago and is now "detained on board" the U. S. schooner, Caroline, commanded by Captain Henly. Jeremiah contends that he has repeatedly appealed to Henly to return Ned without success. The Caroline has recently been ordered back to sea. Jeremiah therefore asks the court to detain Ned on shore while his appeal for possession is heard.
