Stephen Mazureau Esq., Attorney General of Louisiana, represents that the defendants, Antoine, Reine, and Juan De Lacruza, are slaves who "have been illegally imported into this State contrary to law." Mazureau states that Reine was imported in 1812, Antoine in 1813, and "Juan de Lacruza about the month of October 1814, from Carthagena, or some other foreign place or country." Mazureau prays that the slaves be confiscated and sold on behalf of the state. In response, Antoine, calling himself Anthony Rodriguez, filed suit claiming that he was a free man and praying that Mazureau's "libel" suit be dismissed with costs.
